Experimenting with food?

Sometimes a little bit. My food never tastes the same twice. Except cookies and cakes. This is what I cooked yesterday, the first beans from my garden this year. And huge carrots. For dessert I cooked grits in half milk half water and sprinkled it with chopped pine nuts (yes, my favorite!) and a teaspoon of honey. Today I am having eggplants, also the first time this year. It is so wonderful to have your own food fresh from the garden!

Mojca Fo

Browsing through some interesting Slovenian web sites I came across this one of Mojca Sekulič Fo. I love the illustrations she makes! She sells her works in many galleries all over Slovenia. I might go and see myself if there is something I really like - she will be selling these beauties on Saturday at Art Market on one of Ljubljana's bridges, called Čevljarski most (Shoemakers' bridge). The illustrations are drawn on wood.

Fabric

I fell for this fabric (upper one) but they don't deliver it to my country. A pity. A short trip to Paris? I don't think so, at least not right now.

I thought of showing you some work of Slovenian designers but post about this will have to wait a while because I need more time to collect some nice ones. I think that we have quite many talented people working here. Right, for the beginning, here are two links:

Porcelain Catbriyur

Oskar Kogoj Nature Design

I find them interesting, though this doesn't mean that I would like to have any of the objects at home. More to follow sometime...

From the garden

Yesterday's dinner.

Carrot soup - butter, wheat grits, water, salt, grated carrot, mixed egg. Lots of chopped parsley.

Fusilli with homemade pesto and some fresh basil. Later I added some whole pine nuts and salt. I am not a fan of pasta cooked al dente but I never overcook them because they taste terrible if they are cooked too long.

Salad with sunflower nuts, borage flowers, raisins, salt, vinegar, pumpkin oil and again, parsley.

Don't ask me about the dessert, I ate all sorts of sweets, everything that was at hand. :)

A legend

Once upon a time lived Zlatorog (Goldhorn), in remote valleys of Trenta and Bohinj in the Julian Alps, the secret white chamois (steinbock) with golden horns. He lived high in the mountains in the wonderful mountaintop gardens and together with three white women guarded a secret treasure. One day a hunter came to steal the treasure. He stalked Zlatorog and a day came when he shot this beautiful animal. Though, he forgot about the secret power of the white women! From the drops of blood that ran from Zlatorog's wounds a beautiful flower grew out of the soil, named triglavska roža/Triglav's flower. The flower had given Zlatorog his life back and he pushed greedy hunter over the cliff, destroyed his beautiful gardens and vanished from the mountains. The myth of Zlatorog was put into verses by Rudolf Baumbach and published in 1877, becoming his most popular work. Of course, this is not the only version of the myth.

What's your perfect holiday?

Should I bore you with description of my trip to the mountains? I don't think so. While walking up to that mountain hut below the steep peaks I have learned that the point of relationship between two people is also helping each other. Right, we have friends for that, too but many times they don't have time to be there for us because they have families of their own.Mr Ž and I stayed in a hut at Kriški podi. I was amazed at how many Czech people were there. This time they had proper boots but in my opinion they were not dressed properly and as I could see they had inadequate maps as well. Too many foreign tourist come to our mountains insufficiently prepared. It might be a lovely trip but too many times it is their last one. True, our mountains are not that high but they are dangerous at some parts.I climbed three peaks, Križ (2410 m), Stenar (2501 m) and Bovški Gamsovec (2392 m); the latter was the most dangerous. Not the one for people with dizziness. I saw rock goats/steinbocks, a rare sight in our mountains, and marmots that were whistling - telling each other that there might be danger nearby. I saw four magnificent mountain lakes which are result of glaciers melting. There were endless number of alpine flowers, the most beautiful ones. Pure joy. This is my perfect holiday. No sandy beach can beat that. No prairie. No city. I read an article this morning about the mountaineers coming from the peaks sweaty and with wobbly legs but content and with bright, happy faces. Tears came into my eyes simply because I know that I am one of such people. Would you tell me what is your perfect holiday?

Basil

Lots of basil has grown in my garden this year. It is a kind of a new sort of it, with little leaves. So, I thought of using it for pesto. I made some last night before going to bed. Chopped basil, pine nuts, garlic, goat cheese and olive oil. The last drop of it was used for this little glass of pesto. Mmm, delicious. I was too sleepy to make nice label, so I have put simple leaflet to an elastic band. Just to know how fast we will eat it. :) Tomorrow I am off to the mountains again. I wish you happy Friday, and weekend, too!

My Blueberry Nights

One of my favorite fruit are blueberries. I got fat from eating too many blueberry pies while traveling in the USA in 2001; but they tasted soooo good. How could I resist? For some time now I thought of seeing a movie My Blueberry Nights and last evening was perfect day to take a ride to the movies and indulge myself a bit. Not that I really liked the movie but I felt so content while driving back home. I had plan to do some traveling this summer but I suppose it will have to wait a while. Last evening it felt like traveling, the only thing missing was radio in my car and some good music. Then it would had felt like being on a long holiday, driving around with no plan and enjoying whatever life brings.

City smells

While traveling over Europe by train two times in my life, I stopped in many capital cities. Each and every one of them had a certain smell when I stepped off the train. Actually, it happens the same when you step off the plane... Anyway, cities have certain smells and today it smells like in Brussels in Ljubljana. It is quite cold and the sky looks rather dark and gray. It feels good but I wouldn't mind to enjoy in some hot summer days again.

It's my party...

... and I cry if I want to...

No, it wasn't that bad at all. Thank you so much for your birthday wishes! :)
I spent the day looking for ripe wild raspberries. I will have to come again, in about two weeks, they are still small and green. Though, I ate delicious sour milk with some sponge cake and potica, lots of wild blueberries and had a wonderful view on the beloved mountains. It is amazing how colors of the flowers blooming change through the seasons - now there are lots of violet and yellow flowers in the bloom right now. At least below 1800m above sea level.
On the way up to the hill called Porezen, Mr Ž and I stopped at the lace fair in Železniki, one of the towns not far from Ljubljana. Amazing work! How can you go home empty handed seeing all the beauties made by hardworking hands? Women are paid only 1,50 Euro per hour doing this work! A shame, really. We left lots of donation for them in a basket put next to the exhibited pieces of lace. It was Mr Ž who tried the cherry schnapps and I had (oh, yes!) a cup of Turkish coffee and a lemonade. In the evening we went to a party of little Gaja (I guess in English you would write it Gaia). I sewed a little bag and put three round fish into it for Gaja's older sister Julija. They were a hit, all children at the party put the fish into the cake and then into their mouth. Imagination has no limits! :) It was a pleasant lazy day. Well, I won't describe the steep and dangerous slopes Mr Ž lead me to - it should have been a shortcut but it wasn't... Yes, I almost cried there...

Child and birthday (oh, not again!)

Yesterday was a pleasant day to spend lunch in a park nearby. Watching the people pass by, chat and laugh. There were many young mothers with their little babies; a great meeting point it is, this little cafe in the park. On my way to the park I saw a giraffe, drawn on a wall. I wish I could have taken picture of whole of it but there was so little place in that narrow staircase and the sun was shining from the wrong direction, so maybe another time I will take a better shot of it. I approve graffiti if they make the wall look less dull and boring. The giraffe made the staircase look much nicer than it was. Something you smile at when you pass by - if you are one of those people who notice such things while walking around. There is a child in me, always and everywhere. I have no idea why it is so but I like to play. Tomorrow is one of such days when I will be like a child again, being spoiled every and each moment of it. Because it is my birthday. A very special day in a year. I was born on Saturday, on the 200th day in a year.

Birthdays

Once upon a time, such a long time ago, I used to watch ski-jumping on TV. Each time there was ski-jumping, I was in front of TV. Not that he was my hero but I liked him anyway - Matti Nykänen. He was a great star but due to drinking he had such a weird, and I would say, miserable life. It is his 45th birthday today. Happy birthday, Matti! On the photo from left: Jens Weissflog (he will celebrate his birthday on Monday), Matti and Pavel Ploc in 1984.

Veliki Draški vrh...

... is the name of the mountain I climbed yesterday (on the left on the photo, on the right is Triglav, our highest mountain). 2243m above sea level - it took me around three hours to get up there and more than three to get down again (yes, flowers everywhere!). I took 610 photos (no wonder I need so much more time for the climb than it is usually written in the guides). The view was magnificent, everywhere I looked was something that took my breath away. And the fragrance, the strong fragrance of Sternbergs pinks (Dianthus sternbergii)! Intoxicating! Herdsman at the pasture invited me to stay with him... I had to laugh aloud at that offer! However, he makes delicious cheese. It was such a pleasant sunny summer day. I wish there were more like that.

Simple life

In the cool of the evening I baked apple strudel. Apples were very small, from my grandparent's ranch, so it took me quite some time to prepare them. The strudel is a bit sour but very tasty. I like baking strudels because they are so easy to make and even if they look terrible before baking they are usually delicious later. I put some rhubarb into this one. I am having it for lunch today. Yum!The first one has arrived. Not that I get many cards during the year or for my birthday but all that I receive are from special friends (well, I don't have many anyway) and they are always so lovely.I will be away for tomorrow; the weather forecast is good and I will be enjoying the fresh mountain air again and rejoice at the look of those tiny Alpine flowers that are in full bloom right now. What more could I wish for?

Creative

This is how I could describe this weekend - it was a creative one. I stayed at home as the weather forecast was bad, and indeed, we've had terrible weather here. Strong winds, rains, hail. I don't remember that we ever had any such storms in the past. It cooled a bit, so it was an excellent time to put my sewing machine on the desk and be creative. For a long time I wanted to sew a little basket but I never got so far to actually making it. I had some tutorials at home but not everything at hand. I loved the baskets made by Kristel and also tutorial found on Pink Penguin blog was very helpful - at least I got the idea of how much fabric I actually need for one such basket. It was easy and it was fun. I am quite happy with the result. I am sure it was not the last basket I made.Visiting my grandparents is always so relaxing. I think I told you that before. I drove to their ranch yesterday in the morning and spent a magnificent day with them. They talked about the old times and I took notes. It would be a pity to forget. A day before I finished a headband with a help of this tutorial. I gave it to my grandmom to keep her hair out of her eyes and sweat dripping into them while she is working in her huge garden. She loved it!I rarely cook coffee at home, usually when the guests arrive. I have old Ikea tea cups in which I serve the coffee. They're quite big, so when I saw these little cups at our local shop, I immediately decided they have to be mine. I somehow liked them. And they went home with me.Who's the winner in my garden? Piki, of course. Little kittens are growing fast and they will have to find new home. At least I hope they will.

How small it is...

...this little country I live in. On Wednesday my skin smelled of sea and salt, on Thursday my lungs were filled with fresh mountain air. One can climb the highest mountains and bath in the sea on the same day in Slovenia, so small it is.I didn't wash my hair after diving in the sea, so it smelt of salt while I was walking up the hill yesterday in the morning. I wonder why I keep coming back on Možic. Well, not that I wouldn't know the answer... It is one of the most beautiful spots that you can reach in less than one hour from the parking place. And it is so amazing up there. Flowers are in full bloom right now - it feels just like walking through huge botanical garden. And the view is fantastic! It was so peaceful that all I could hear were flies, bees and beetles flying around me. I will come again. If not this year then the next one.
I enjoyed swimming in the sea again. Adriatic is very salty and warm sea. Slovenian part of it is a bit dirtier than the rest of it but still clean enough to swim in it safely. There are no huge waves like at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean or any other open seas. We don't have any nice beaches (well, those that are nice are crowded anyway) but to cool yourself you don't need a nice beach, right? It felt good, really good, to swim in the sea again.

Posts

I read a few posts in Slovenian I wrote almost a year ago. How different they sound and how much nicer when I use all sorts of words and phrases that I don't know in English. But actually I don't have any wish that someone I know here in Slovenia would read my blog. E.g. my parents, my friends, my colleagues. Because it is kind of my diary that I write almost every day. My thoughts, what I do. Strange, isn't it?Sometimes I think that it is no use writing all that down (almost nobody reads this and I write my diary anyway, although with no photos) but at the same time I love reading your blogs. They are wonderful and sometimes they make my day. I found so many inspirational things in your posts, you can't imagine how grateful I am for that!Recently I've been having problems with my Blogger. It doesn't want to make paragraphs. I have no idea why. Someone is playing with me. :) A nice game. I leave you today with a couple of photos of Ljubljana (there is a dragon in Ljubljana's coat of arms that's why you might often see it when you visit my birthplace). Happy Tuesday!

Summer's in the air

Don't think that I was sewing this weekend although I intended to do so. It is just too humid and at these temperatures all you wish for is to sit still and do nothing at all. Well, except if you are somewhere in the woods or up above 2000 m in the mountains.Sweet tooth as I am I baked a squash strudel (sweet, of course; and yes, it does look like a giant snake!). My vegetable garden is full of pumpkin plants and I had to pull two more out to give place to other vegetables like rhubarb and cucumbers. Pepperoni is ripe too and hopefully tomato will be reddening soon. I doubt I will have any this year - there is this strange disease that destroys them each year as soon as they start to get red.
Not only summer, also love is in the air. Little beauties - Azure Damselflies (Coenagrion puella) are mating (click on a photo to see how the wings of a female are sparkling). In Slovenian they have a cute name (like most of the dragonflies) - travniški škratec - in translation it would be something like a meadow little dwarf. I love summer, it is my favorite time of a year. Maybe because I was born at the peak of it...

Norway spruce

Right, my dictionary is poor on this word but I hope I am not so wrong if I say that I used the young sprouts of the Norway spruce (Picea abies) for making a delicious syrup which is very good during the winter time. Especially when I am having a terrible cough. A layer of sugar and a layer of spruce tops. Continue to do so until you run out of spruce sprouts. I will do the same with Eastern purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) which has started to bloom right now.
I remember my grandmom giving me or my brother a spoonful of homemade spruce syrup when we were little kids. I guess we were disturbing her sleep at night when we were sick for she was sleeping in a room next door.I will leave the jar in full sun still for sometime because the sugar has to melt completely. Yum, I can't wait to taste it when it's ready!

Mountains

There is no place more beautiful than our mountains. No prairie or grassland (although I love them) can beat the sight of the mountains, the little tiny Alpine flowers, soft green twigs of larches, rocks scattered around. I found out that one day in the mountains is like a week at the seaside. I am filled up with the energy after being surrounded by all those beauties. (The photo below was taken in June.)Yesterday was one of those days when I was biting my knees again. Almost three hours up and a bit less down again. Two paths, very different ones. (On the photo: Lake Bohinj from Črna prst.) Clouds were chasing us and some rain fell when we were already in the hut up there. I was finally on Črna prst, a peak, sometimes called a botanical garden in the mountains. Mr Ž had promised to take me there four years ago. Now the promise is fulfilled. I will have to come again as most of the interesting flowers are still not in bloom. If not this year then the next one. (On the photo: Geranium argenteum in Latin, Silvery Crane's Bill in English and srebrna krvomočnica in Slovenian, very rare plant in Slovenia, found in abundance on Črna prst. In full bloom at this time of the year.)

Dutch twist

I've been tagged by Kristel to do a random meme with a Dutch twist. I was thinking about this yesterday and it came up my mind that lots of things that happened in my life were connected to the Netherlands and people who live there. I am afraid I won't be able to share photos on this subject as I don't have them in my home right now.
So, here it goes:
  1. One of my penpals in my youth was Henriette. She was from Holland, she lived in Utrecht the last time I heard from her. She was a sweet friend, I know today that I haven't appreciated our friendship enough. I guess I had known her since I was about 15 years old. She was a bit older than me and she loved rubber stamps and decorating, creating all sorts of cards and sweet things. She loved children. After many years of writing to each other I met her one day when she was traveling through Slovenia to the Croatian coast. Her boyfriend was as nice as she was. I loved being with her. I find all Dutch people so relaxed and I have always wished I would posses some of that relaxed attitude myself (perhaps in another life if there is any). She brought me a cake then to say thank you for the hospitality. We were so poor then we could hardly manage to prepare something decent to eat! After many miscarriages she gave birth to Oliver, a sweet little boy. Perhaps our paths cross again, who knows. I hope they do.
  2. The first guy I kissed with was Dutch. :) I met him when I was at the seaside in one of the Croatian camps. Lots of Dutch people come to have a vacation there and he was one of them. I was 16 and he was 18. Ronald was his name. I actually fell for his friend but there is always a twist of fate and I ended up kissing Ronald. He was from Groningen.
  3. I visited Holland several times. The first time it was when I was traveling by train around Europe. I was 19. I went to see Groningen, too. We were three girls traveling together and we visited most of the capitals or big cities in Western Europe. Amsterdam was one of them. I like Holland, the houses, the space, the culture breathes out from every corner. At least that's how I saw it each time I was there. Then I was there with my colleagues from the University. I can't remember what was the occasion, I just remember roaming through the street of Amsterdam. And a lady in the red district shouting at me. :( After that I stopped there when I was traveling alone around Europe by train. It was just a short stop that time. I guess I was there the last time in 1998 (or sometime then) when one day Mr B and I decided to go on one week's trip around Benelux. It was in May, so when the tulips were in full bloom. We drove around with no specific goal and it was so relaxing. Holidays like that are actually the most precious ones.
  4. At certain point in my life, when I was a teenager and also some years after that, my favorite flower was a tulip. From my first trip to Holland I brought home dark violet tulips. Some are still in my mom's garden. And there are lots of tulips in my garden too. Beauties.
  5. My colleague at work has a boyfriend who is Dutch. They are expecting their first child in October.
  6. The food I loved most while being in Holland were pancakes. Pannekoeken (am I right Kristel?). A sweet tooth I am.
  7. Two years ago I was working in a joint project with people from the Embassy of the Netherlands. Pleasant people, really. So relaxed, full of imagination, never boring.
I think that's all that happened in my life and is connected with the Netherlands. My life has got some Dutch twist in it too. Lucky me!

I tag Emily, Kari and Bianca (yes, she is Dutch, too!). I hope you will all play along.
